Event Info
One of my bests, Becka (Becka Dots, B.Dots), is hosting Open Sesame in Tacoma, WA on May 6th. Guess what!? Some collage work of mine will be sold at the event! Yippee skips, I’m getting back into the game my friends. The market is centered around a live literary open mic at noon from talent across the country, a pretty rare event! Support friends supporting friends, okay?
Wanna Know What I’m Showing?
All of these works are original collages combining acrylic, fabric, terracotta, and pen on paper. Currently, they’re all available to purchase on the website for pickup. Shipping will be available after the event :)
The Words and The Works
I’ve been a ‘professional creative’ for about 14 years now. Up until this collection and my most recent surge of inspiration, I have relied on perfectionism to dictate my art. I focused so heavily on creating authentic spaces for others that I didn’t see I wasn’t creating an authentic space for myself in my own art. My art was not about expressing, it was planned, white-knuckled, and judged on aesthetics. When I was making my first ‘real’ painting a couple of weeks ago this became painfully obvious to me. See the embedded newsletter below for what I was reflecting on then.
I experienced a lot of resistance while making that work(that will be fully released in the future, alongside a collection of other works) and a hell of a lot of anxiety. All of that was perfectionism. I need reminders and affirmations like the one above to calm this voice. I am nowhere near authentically expressing myself, but I’m closer than I ever have been. These collages are me dipping my toe into prior motifs and methods, with a reframe of letting the work reveal itself. A visual representation of what I have been holding inside for 14 years (actually probably 31). Playful, colorful, frenetic, anxious, and loving.
Thank you, you mean more to me than you know,
Alex
